Kat Abughazaleh, a progressive candidate running for the U.S. House of Representatives in Illinois’ 9th Congressional District, responded defiantly to federal charges brought against her by the U.S. Department of Justice. According to reports from MSNBC, the charges stem from her participation in protests near an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Broadview, Illinois. She faces one count of conspiracy to impede or injure an ICE officer and another count of assaulting or impeding an officer while performing official duties.
The indictment accuses Abughazaleh and five other protesters of aggressively banging on an ICE vehicle’s windows and hood, pushing against the vehicle to hinder its movement, and etching the word “PIG” onto the car. In a video shared on social media following the indictment, Abughazaleh described the charges as baseless and claimed they were an attempt to intimidate Americans from exercising their First Amendment rights to protest.
“This is a political prosecution and a gross attempt to silence dissent,” she said. “This case is a major push by the Trump administration to criminalize protest and punish anyone who speaks out against them. That’s why I’m going to fight these unjust charges.”
Abughazaleh also accused ICE agents of physically attacking peaceful demonstrators at the facility, stating that the actions were taken simply because protesters voiced concerns about the presence of masked individuals abducting community members and instilling fear. In her message, she urged supporters to show courage amid efforts to suppress their voices.
“As scary as all this is, I have spent my career fighting America’s backslide into fascism,” she said. “I’m not going to stop now. And I hope you won’t either.”
Abughazaleh has frequently participated in demonstrations outside the Broadview ICE facility. Last month, an ICE officer was captured on camera throwing her to the ground during a protest. Federal law enforcement officials in the area have faced multiple allegations of using excessive force, including incidents involving Rev. David Black, a pastor from the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago, who was shot with pepper balls while peacefully protesting outside the facility.
