Amazon Web Services struggling to recover from global web outages

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon, is continuing efforts to restore stability following a major outage that caused widespread connectivity issues for businesses, popular websites, and applications globally.

In an update on its status page on Monday, AWS stated that it was observing recovery across all services but warned that some customers might still experience disruptions. The outage affected well-known platforms such as Zoom, Roblox, Fortnite, Duolingo, Canva, and Wordle, among others.

According to Downdetector, a website that tracks outages, many applications and websites—including Reddit and Xfinity—have returned to normal. However, the site reported over 11 million incidents of connectivity problems worldwide since the start of the disruption, impacting hundreds of businesses. Some services, including Amazon’s own offerings, faced renewed issues after initially appearing to recover earlier in the day.

AWS provides essential computing power, data storage, and digital infrastructure to companies, governments, and individuals. Disruptions to its systems can lead to outages across various platforms that depend on its cloud services.

The company indicated that the problem originated within the EC2 internal network and ruled out a cyberattack as the cause.

Mehdi Daoudi, CEO of Catchpoint, a firm that monitors internet performance, noted that while the financial impact of the outage has not yet been fully assessed, it is expected to be significant. “The incident highlights the complexity and fragility of the internet, as well as how much every aspect of our work depends on it,” he said. He added that the financial toll could reach into the hundreds of billions due to lost productivity and operational delays across industries, from airlines to manufacturing.

Several platforms, including AI startup Perplexity, trading app Robinhood, messaging service Signal, and cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, also reported issues linked to the AWS outage. Perplexity confirmed the issue was related to AWS and stated it was working to resolve the problem.

AWS is one of the leading cloud service providers, competing with Google and Microsoft to offer scalable computing power and digital services to organizations and institutions. Outages on its servers can have far-reaching consequences, as many companies rely on its infrastructure for daily operations.

Analysts have pointed to the outage as a reminder of the high level of consolidation in the global cloud market. AWS holds 30% of the market, with Microsoft and Google accounting for 20% and 13%, respectively. This concentration raises concerns about the risks associated with relying on a few dominant providers.

Corinne Cath-Speth, head of digital issues at Article 19, a free expression group, emphasized the broader implications of the outage. “These disruptions are not just technical issues—they’re democratic failures. When a single provider goes dark, critical services go offline with it—media outlets become inaccessible, secure communication apps like Signal stop functioning, and the infrastructure that serves our digital society crumbles,” she said. She called for greater diversification in cloud computing to prevent such vulnerabilities.

Downdetector listed hundreds of websites and apps that users experienced difficulties accessing during the outage. Amazon’s shopping platform, Prime Video, and Alexa were also reportedly affected.

Reuters reported that Lyft’s app was down for thousands of users in the U.S., and several bank customers in the U.K. also faced service interruptions. Bank of Scotland acknowledged the issue, expressing regret and asking customers to remain patient as it investigates the cause.
