Tuesday night, American voters delivered a clear message to Congressional Democrats: in response to President Donald Trump’s actions, the public expects them to resist rather than yield.
Congressional Democrats are expected to honor the will and mandate of the electorate. Voters have entrusted their representatives with the responsibility of opposing Trump’s policies and ensuring that America remains affordable for all citizens.
Over the past months, Trump has exhibited behavior akin to that of a despotic leader. He has undermined Social Security by dismissing thousands of dedicated public employees. He has significantly weakened Medicaid, which could lead to the closure of rural hospitals and nursing homes, all while providing tax breaks to the wealthiest individuals. Additionally, rising grocery prices reflect the impact of Trump’s trade policies.
Across the nation, from Virginia to New Jersey, Georgia, and New York City, voters overwhelmingly rejected Trump and the MAGA movement. Democratic candidates secured significant victories by opposing Trump’s authoritarian tendencies and committing to making America more accessible and affordable for all.
From moderate governors-elect in Virginia and New Jersey to a democratic socialist mayor-elect in New York City, the consistent message was clear: oppose Trumpism and prioritize affordability for all Americans.
For the past 35 days, Congressional Democrats have remained steadfast in their opposition. They have refused to support a partisan Republican government funding bill that fails to prevent health insurance costs from doubling or tripling for tens of millions of Americans, or to reverse the severe cuts to Medicaid. Despite Republican control of the House, Senate, and White House, they have instead initiated a government shutdown and taken a weeks-long vacation.
Prior to this week’s elections, reports circulated in Washington that a group of Senate Democrats was considering yielding to Republican demands. These Democrats reportedly sought to provide Republicans with their votes on a funding bill in exchange for a future healthcare vote, without securing any immediate benefits.
Polling data indicates that the public holds Republicans accountable for both the government shutdown and the surge in healthcare costs.
Following the recent elections, it is now Republicans who face increased pressure. If Democrats remain resolute, they may prevail in this battle and protect healthcare access for millions of Americans.
The message from voters was unified: fight against Trumpism and make America affordable. Those who fail to recognize this consensus include media figures whose roles often involve downplaying such messages.
Eight Democratic Senators must not undermine the clear will of the voters expressed on Tuesday night.
Democratic leadership in both the House and Senate recently sent a letter to President Trump, stating: “We write to demand a bipartisan meeting of legislative leaders to end the GOP shutdown of the federal government and decisively address the Republican healthcare crisis. Democrats stand ready to meet with you face to face, anytime and anyplace.”
Despite this, a faction of Senate Democrats has indicated their intent to avoid confrontation with Trump and not pursue affordability by compromising on the shutdown without securing lower healthcare costs. This approach disregards their own leadership and colleagues, as well as the wishes of the American people.
Eight Democratic Senators must not be allowed to subvert the will of the voters clearly demonstrated on Tuesday night. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada and retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire are leading this group of so-called “cave-for-nothing” senators. Citizens are encouraged to contact these lawmakers and urge them to heed the voices of the people, resist Trump, and work toward making America affordable by addressing the Republican healthcare crisis.
