Zelenskyy vows to only use Tomahawks against Russian military targets

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that his country would only deploy long-range Tomahawk missiles against Russian military targets, as the Kremlin expressed concern over potential U.S. plans to supply the weapons to Kyiv.

Zelenskyy’s remarks were shared by Fox News on Sunday, the same day he held a conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump. On social media platform X, the Ukrainian leader described the discussion as “very productive,” highlighting talks on enhancing Ukraine’s air defense, resilience, and long-range capabilities. This marked the second time the two had spoken within a few days.

On Monday, Trump indicated that he would only support providing Tomahawks to Ukraine if he had clarity on their intended use. He mentioned that he had “sort of made a decision” on the matter, though he did not elaborate further.

Tomahawk missiles, with a range of 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles), could allow Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory. In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov called the issue “extreme concern” for Russia, according to comments published on Sunday. He warned that some missile variants are capable of carrying nuclear warheads and noted that tensions are rising across all sides.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron criticized recent Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. After speaking with Zelenskyy, Macron remarked that while the Gaza agreement offered hope for peace in the Middle East, the conflict in Ukraine must also end. He warned that continued Russian aggression would result in consequences.

In a separate statement, Zelenskyy urged Macron to provide more missiles and air defense systems to Ukraine. He argued that Russia is exploiting global attention on other conflicts, such as the situation in the Middle East, to intensify its bombardments. Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia is targeting Ukraine’s energy sector ahead of winter, aiming to cripple the country’s infrastructure.

According to Zelenskyy, Russia has launched over 3,100 drones, 92 missiles, and approximately 1,360 glide bombs at Ukraine in the past week. Two employees of DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company, were injured in overnight attacks on a substation in Kyiv province, as reported by the regional governor.

Earlier in the week, Ukraine experienced widespread blackouts following what Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko called “one of the largest concentrated strikes” on its energy infrastructure. The attacks underscored the ongoing efforts by Russia to disrupt Ukraine’s power supply amid the winter season.
