Physical confrontations occurred outside Israel’s Ministry of Defence in Tel Aviv on Wednesday as security forces clashed with family members of Israeli captives held in Gaza. The incident took place during a protest demanding the release of those detained, as tensions rise over the potential escalation of military operations in the besieged enclave.
The demonstration was held near the Kirya, Israel’s central military headquarters. Protesters, including the father of captive Guy Illouz, attempted to enter the premises, leading to clashes with police. According to reports, demonstrators were pushed back by law enforcement. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum issued a statement expressing urgency, saying, “Time is running out – our loved ones can’t wait any longer. We either bring them home now, or we lose them for good. There are moments in history when we must stand up and do what’s right – this is that moment.”
In recent months, families of captives have increasingly criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid widespread protests across the country. The ongoing military operations in Gaza, including ground offensives and heavy bombardment, have raised concerns about the safety of those held in the region.
The families also addressed a message directly to Israeli Army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, stating, “You know this war has run its course, and the only path to real victory is a single deal that brings everyone home.” Local police officials acknowledged the protesters’ frustration, allowing them to demonstrate but urging them not to interfere with law enforcement.
Protesters sought to prevent military action in areas where captives are believed to be located. According to reports from Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Itzik Horn, the father of captive Eitan Horn, expressed opposition to the expansion of the war, questioning the motives of the prime minister. He called for transparency, saying, “I expect the prime minister to speak to the public, to explain the implications of this idea to the country and the price we’ll pay. We are the people. I want the prime minister to explain why he wants to kill my son.”
Meanwhile, minor clashes occurred at an anti-war demonstration organized by Standing Together, the largest Arab-Israeli grassroots movement in Israel. The event took place in the Gaza Envelope, approximately 7 kilometers from the Gaza border. A protester was arrested, and flour was scattered on police officers by demonstrators. Earlier footage showed activists gathering at the Yad Mordechai Junction, a kibbutz in southern Israel, preparing to march toward the Gaza border.
